UNITED NATIONS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY – OMAHA AREA EVENTS
Public Discussion: IS CLEAN ENERGY RELIABLE
'If I flip the light switch, I expect the lights to go on… can renewable energy do that?'
Does clean energy mean no new coal or nuclear plants? Weeks ago, when asked about the generation of new coal and nucler plants in the United States, Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Jon Wellinghoff stated that "We may not need any, ever".
(New York Times, "Energy Regulator Chief Says New Coal, Nuclear Plants May Be Unnecessary", April 22)
Can we rely on natural resources to be there when we need them?
Days later other energy experts with ties to the oil industry and renewable resources responded stating that renewable energy is not reliable. "We expect the lights to go on when we flip a switch, and we do not expect our computers to shut down as nature dictates. Solar and wind electricity are available only part of the time that consumers demand power."
(From the column, "Getting real on wind and solar power" - James Schlesinger, Robert Hirsch)
