UNITED NATIONS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY – OMAHA AREA EVENTS
ICAN Plants Trees at Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery
Ten Trees were planted at the historic Prospect Hill Cemetery on the corner of 33rd & Parker Streets by volunteers from the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN) on April 22, 2009 in celebration of Earth Day. ICAN is a non-profit organization that has provided innovative, quality leadership and professional development programs to more than 13,000 women and men from hundreds of business and non-profit organizations nationally. ICAN raised the money for the tree planting from donations from the 2008 ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference held in Omaha last spring to help offset the conference’s environmental impact.
Known as Omaha’s pioneer cemetery, Prospect Hill Cemetery was founded in 1858 and is the burial place of many Omahans. In 1979, Prospect Hill was designated an Historic Site by the State of Nebraska and by the Landmarks Commission of Omaha. “This location was chosen because of the lack of trees along the street and potential for maximum impact. This tree planting will help reduce the carbon impact of our 2008 conference while enriching an historic site in our community in need of beauty,” said Mary Prefontaine, ICAN executive director.
Trees planted during Arbor Day week or any tree planted between April 2007 until 2017 can be counted toward ReTree Nebraska’s goal of planting 1 million trees in Nebraska Communities.
